Cuicuilco Pyramid, Mexico City. The oldest pyramid in this area. The whole area abandoned around 200AD when a small volcano (Xitle) popped up and pumped lava in this area for about 70 years. Approximately 30 square miles of solid lava (Pedregal). I like to visit this place and hike around on the trails and go to the top of the famous round pyramid. Here, you get a sense of what this area was like before it was all paved over like it is today. My father visited this place in 1955. Come hungry!

When viewed from above or on ancient maps, these lakes were said to resemble the shape of a rabbit, a figure often seen in the shadows of the moon in Mesoamerican mythology. The island of Tenochtitlan sat exactly where the "navel" of that lunar rabbit would be.
